Second-year MFA candidate Sarah Michalik‘s work “Arena” has been selected as a finalist for the 2013 NICHE Awards – Student Division category of Sculptural Glass. Her work will be featured in the finalist show at the Buyers Market of American Craft, February 16-18, 2013, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch Street, in Philadelphia. Awards Reception and Ceremony will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 from 6-9 p.m. Details can be found at the magazine’s website: http://www.nicheawards.com

In addition, two of her works were recently included in the The 12^th Annual Art Inter/National Exhibition at Box Heart Galleries in Pittsburgh. Here is some info about the exhibition:

Box Heart’s Art Inter/National… here and abroad exhibition began in 2002 by exploring how environment impacts the artistic process and influences what each artist creates. Now in its 12th year, the tradition of this exhibition continues to expand on its general concept by exposing the methods artists use to pursue their identity and interpret the invisible realms that reside within their subconscious. Over 550 entries, from regional, national, and international artists, were received for consideration this year. Of these entries, 20 artists were selected for participation!

“This body of work, “Constructed Connections,” investigates the digital age through the phenomenon of human connectivity, bringing some of the world’s public networks to light.  In our digital world there is a constant need to connect with other human beings through our physical and virtual lives, bridging the gap of people in different locations. Michalik has incorporated the use of algorithms and mathematical structures to view the complex connections between the people of the physical world in relation to the virtual one. These visual arrangements have generated glass sculpture focused on connections, globalization, and perceptual shift. Centering on the theme of her work, connectedness, Michalik intends to draw attention to social trends of 21st century and highlight our relationships in the world.”
